This unique accommodation invites travellers to pause and unwind in Sodankylä, close to Lokka Reservoir and nestled beside the Lokka dam.


Grandma’s Cottage has everything needed for a holiday for two, along with a beautiful view of the yard. Sompio National Park, meanwhile, offers a unique wilderness setting for outdoor activities. An excellent spot for photographing the Northern Lights is just 200 metres away.


The cottage is located in the yard of the former Lokka post office and the present-day Tuovinen family home, at Vintiläntie 23. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Grandma’s Cottage was home to the mother of the postmaster at the time.

Facilities at Grandma’s Cottage

The 50-square-metre cottage has a well-equipped kitchen, a small bedroom, a bathroom, a toilet and an electric sauna. The bedroom has a double bed, made up and ready for guests. Bed linen and towels are included in the accommodation price; the towels are folded on top of the washing machine. The cottage also has a travel cot and high chair for small children.


The cottage has heating and air conditioning, as well as a good internet connection and a television.

Any hiking clothes can be dried in the main building’s boiler room, which has its own entrance.

Dog run in the yard

There are 4 dog enclosures near the cottage, three of which house the hosts’ hunting dogs: 2 Finnish Spitz and 1 elk hound. Please be prepared for the dogs to bark at passing animals. One enclosure is empty and can be used for guests’ dogs if needed.

Please note the distances

Our accommodation is in the middle of the wilderness, which is worth keeping in mind when buying food and fuel and planning the length of your stay. Sodankylä town centre is 90 km away, and the nearest village shop is 40 km away in Tanhua.

Game processing facilities

The heated, versatile garage is freely available to guests. It has a freezer for storing berries, fish and game, as well as a vacuum sealer. The garage also has a hoist for skinning moose, suitable facilities for processing fish, running water and drainage.

For visitors heading to northern Lapland

In summer, you can drive directly from Lokka along a gravel road, Mäntypääntie, to Porttipahta and Northern Lapland. In winter, the road is not ploughed, so Northern Lapland can be reached by first heading back towards Sodankylä.
