Lapland’s wilderness is a hunter’s dream. Vast hunting grounds, silence and beautiful nature make every hunting trip a unique experience. Just as important is choosing accommodation that understands the practical needs of hunters.
Good Accommodation Makes the Perfect Base
After a long day in the wilderness, possibly with game to bring back, you need a comfortable place to rest, eat and prepare for the next day. A well-equipped kitchen, storage space for game and somewhere to dry outdoor clothing and equipment all make a difference. And after hours spent outdoors, a hot sauna is the perfect way to relax.
Our
Traditional Finnish House (the Old Post House) in Lokka, Sodankylä, just a stone’s throw from the Lokka Reservoir, is well suited to hunting groups. The house has several bedrooms, so larger groups can stay comfortably under the same roof. The kitchen is well equipped, the sauna is wood-heated, and hunting clothes and equipment can be dried in a separate boiler room.
Grandma’s Cottage is located in the same yard and is ideal for a smaller group of two. Around the turn of the 1960s and 1970s, the cottage was home to the mother of the Old Post House owner. Step inside and you can still sense its 1960s atmosphere, now combined with modern comforts. The cottage has a fully equipped kitchen, a double bed, an electric sauna and everything needed for a comfortable stay.
Facilities for Processing and Storing Game
Our property also includes facilities designed specifically with hunters in mind. The approximately 50 m² heated game processing building includes:
- A ceiling-mounted hoist for skinning moose
- Two large freezers for storing game, fish and berries
- A vacuum sealer for processing and packing game and fish
- Hot and cold running water and drainage
Facilities like these are not available at every accommodation. Game can be processed with suitable equipment, and there is plenty of freezer space even for larger hunting groups.
Dogs Are Welcome
For many hunters, a dog is an essential companion. Dogs are welcome to stay with us, and an outdoor dog enclosure is available in the yard when needed.
We also have three hunting dogs of our own, including Finnish Spitz dogs and an elk hound, so you can be sure that this is a dog-friendly place.
Hunting Areas and Permits
The area around Lokka is well known for its hunting grounds. The Lokka Reservoir and the surrounding wilderness provide extensive terrain for both moose and small-game hunting.
Sompio Strict Nature Reserve is located north of the reservoir. Visitors should note that movement within the reserve is restricted to marked trails.
Hunting permits should be arranged in advance and can be purchased online through Metsähallitus at
eraluvat.fi. We recommend obtaining the necessary permits before your trip, as last-minute availability may be limited.
Local Guidance from Experienced Hosts
One of our strengths is our many years of experience in the Lapland wilderness. Hunting guidance can also be arranged separately throughout the year.
From our yard, it is easy to head straight into the surrounding wilderness for hunting, fishing, berry picking or hiking. Our location beside the Lokka Reservoir and dam makes it an excellent base for an active outdoor holiday.
Allow Enough Time for Both Hunting and Relaxing
Lokka is located approximately 90 kilometres northeast of Sodankylä and is reached along a narrow road. Rovaniemi Airport is around 220 kilometres away. In winter, the drive from Saariselkä is also considerably longer because you need to travel south via Sodankylä.
In summer, Mäntypääntie provides a direct route from Lokka towards the E75 and Saariselkä. The road is not maintained in winter.
It is worth keeping these distances in mind when planning your trip. A one-night stay is possible, but travelling from further away can mean arriving late and leaving early the next morning.
At least two nights gives you more time to enjoy the trip, while a full week is ideal if you want to make the most of the hunting grounds and experience Lapland without rushing.
