Some places have a special atmosphere that you can feel the moment you step inside. Our Grandma’s Cottage in the village of Lokka, Sodankylä, is one of those places. Small, cosy and full of history, it takes you back in time while still offering all the comforts needed for a relaxing and idyllic stay.
Stay in a Cottage with a Story
Grandma’s Cottage is located in the same yard as our other accommodation, the former Lokka post office, now known as the Traditional Finnish House.
The history of Grandma’s Cottage dates back to the late 1960s and early 1970s, when the mother of the Old Post House owner lived in this small cottage.
Its original character has been carefully preserved. The interior still reflects the atmosphere of the 1960s and 1970s, now complemented by modern comforts.
Comfortable Accommodation for Two or a Small Family
Grandma’s Cottage is approximately 50 m² and includes:
- A fully equipped kitchen with dishes, cutlery, cooking utensils, dishwasher, fridge, freezer, hob, oven, microwave, coffee maker, kettle and toaster
- A small and cosy bedroom with either a double bed or two single beds. Beds are made ready for your arrival, and bed linen and towels are included
- A baby cot, travel cot and high chair for families with small children
- A bathroom, toilet and private electric sauna
- A washing machine and drying facilities
- Television, books and magazines, as well as Wi-Fi
The key will be waiting for you at the entrance or in a key box, so you can settle in as soon as you arrive without waiting for a separate key handover.
Practical Game and Fish Processing Facilities
Guests staying at Grandma’s Cottage can also use the approximately 50 m² processing building located in the same yard. It includes:
- Hot and cold running water and drainage
- Two large freezers for storing fish, berries and game
- A suitable area for cleaning and processing fish
- A vacuum sealer for packing game and fish
- A ceiling-mounted hoist for skinning moose
If your stay includes berry picking, fishing or gathering other local produce, you can process and store everything conveniently on site.
Peace, Silence and Nature
Lokka is a small and peaceful village with little traffic and plenty of space around you. The silence is one of Grandma’s Cottage’s greatest qualities: no rush, no busy surroundings and no need to follow a tight schedule.
Wi-Fi is available if you need to work remotely or stay connected during your visit.
Nature begins right outside the cottage. The Lokka Reservoir is nearby, offering a peaceful place to sit and enjoy the scenery. The surrounding wilderness is ideal for hiking, berry picking and mushroom picking.
In summer, guests can also use the shared outdoor grill. Pets are welcome.
Give Yourself Enough Time to Enjoy Your Stay
Lokka is located around 90 kilometres northeast of Sodankylä and is reached along a narrow road. Rovaniemi is approximately 220 kilometres away.
The remote location is part of Lokka’s charm, but it is worth allowing enough time for your visit. On a one-night stay, much of your time can easily be spent travelling.
Two nights is already a good start, while a week gives you much more time to slow down, explore the surroundings and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.
